# ONOMOGO Freeze Strategy Guide

Freeze is easy to underestimate because it looks like a pause button. In ONOMOGO, the important detail is that the run clock pauses while scoring and the pick cooldown can continue, so Freeze can create productive time rather than dead time.

## Run clock versus real time

A frozen run stops consuming run-clock seconds. Your scoring engine can continue operating and the pick cooldown can continue moving, which means a long enough Freeze can generate score and potentially another card choice without spending the same amount of run-clock time.

This distinction makes Freeze especially strong when your existing engine is already productive. Freezing a weak engine preserves time, but freezing a strong engine preserves time while that engine keeps earning.

## Not every Freeze is free value

Freeze cards are balanced with different costs. Deep Freeze weakens multiplier, Absolute Zero temporarily locks core scoring stats, and Chill can remove run-clock time if you take it while already frozen. The duration alone is not enough to judge the card.

The useful question is how much productive time the card creates after accounting for the penalty it imposes on your current build.

## Freeze and Speed work differently

Speed shrinks future cooldowns. Freeze preserves run-clock time while current cooldowns and scoring continue. Combining the two can be powerful because Speed makes each frozen second more likely to contain another available pick.

That interaction is also why a Freeze card can be worth more late in a high-Speed run than its face value initially suggests.

## Defrost turns the state into a build

Defrost adds +10 pickaxes per second while Frozen or locked. The bonus is added after a lock and applies only once per tick if both are active. Freeze cards, Thief, pickaxe-lock hazards, and Absolute Zero can activate it.

## Practical Freeze timing

Freeze becomes more attractive when your live score rate is high, when your next cooldown is still some distance away, or when you have synergies that explicitly reward the frozen state. It becomes less attractive when the card's lock or multiplier penalty disables the engine you are trying to preserve.

- Strong engine + clean Freeze is usually better than weak engine + clean Freeze.
- Check whether you are already frozen before taking Chill.
- Do not value Absolute Zero as ten unrestricted scoring seconds: its lock is the point of the trade-off.
- Remember that Freeze does not remove hazards from an offer already on screen.
