# Why the Best Card Changes Every 10 Seconds

Canonical page: https://onomogo.com/guides/best-card-changes

The best card in ONOMOGO isn't necessarily the strongest card. It's the one you pick at the right moment. The run is short, and every pick changes what best means.

## Strength is not the same as fit

Printed power is a clue, not a verdict. Bloom, Overclock and Gold Rush can each win a run or waste a click. The card stays the same. The future it still has, and the engine it has to work with, do not.

## Growth wants a future

Bloom adds income on later picks, so it does not need to look impressive when you take it. Early, that quiet growth has time to sit under the multiplier and combo you build afterwards. Late, with only a couple of picks left, it has almost nothing left to count. Slow Burn is the same idea in time: it grows income as the seconds pass, and only if those seconds are still coming.

## Bursts want an engine

Gold Rush is the opposite shape: a huge income burst that vanishes almost immediately. Before you have a multiplier or a combo worth the name, it shouts and the run is back where it was. Once that engine exists, the same short window is amplified by them. A short multiplier such as Hot Streak or Power Surge works the same way. It boosts the present, so it wants a present that is already earning.

## Overclock sends a bill with the Speed

Overclock grants a large, lasting Speed increase and charges a card box plus time off the clock. Early, the extra picks can feed a growing engine, but you spend future choices before the run has a shape. Once you are scoring, each extra pick is worth more, and so is each second you removed. Near the end there may not be enough run left for the Speed to repay the clock.

## The finish likes value you can use now

Immediate rewards and finish-line effects become more attractive as the end approaches, because unused growth expires with the clock. Echo Chamber counts Boost and Engine cards, past and still to come, and pays on the final score rather than the live rate. On a small score it looks like a shrug. On a large score, with little time left to build a new engine, the same card is doing real work.

## A small card can be the missing piece

Judge offers within your run. Defrost earns +10 pickaxes per second while Frozen or locked, pairing with Freeze cards, Thief, pickaxe-lock hazards, and Absolute Zero. Converter turns Multiply cards into income, including later ones. It repairs a run that has multiplier and not much income, and it does very little if Multiply never arrives. The Card Library is where you check what a card actually counts.

## Read the direction, not just the number

Forward-looking cards should be judged by the picks and seconds still ahead. Backward-looking cards should be judged by the history already built. Survivor pays multiplier from time the run has already been going, so an early copy has almost no past to read. Momentum, Assembly Line and Stacking look both ways: they recognise a build you have started, then keep growing. The beginner guide, the scoring guide and the synergy guide cover the checklist, the layers and the packages.

## Before you click

Ask whether the card is good right now, not whether it is good in the abstract.

- Name what the card needs (future picks, a live engine, or a past to read) before you compare it with the card beside it.
- Let growth cards have a future, and let short bursts have an engine.
- Price Speed that costs time and a box against how hard the run is already scoring.
- If a card looks small alone, look for the other card that makes it count.
