Engine cards build the underlying pickaxe rate. Earlier Engine picks have more run-clock time to repay you, while scaling Engines can become increasingly valuable as the run develops.

Forward-looking: its value is created by future picks or future events, so taking it earlier usually gives it more opportunities to work.
